2015-02-14 Barry Robinson preachingThe Sermon was given by Barry Robinson.
Do we try to blend in with the world so that no one finds out that we are a Christian? Joseph of Arimathea was a secret disciple of Jesus. John 19:38. He was a member of the Sanhedrin which had condemned Jesus to death. We should be thankful to him for taking the body of Jesus and placing it in his own tomb. Mark 15:43-46. He took a strong stand for Jesus and did not stay a secret disciple. We should also stand up for Jesus in this hostile world. We should go to the foot of the cross often.
The whole crowd, Jews, Gentiles and the women all saw Christ die.
Luke 23:44-55. The cross is at the centre of the Christian faith. 1 Corinthians 15:3. No-one survives a Roman crucifixion. Jesus died according to the scriptures. Exodus 12:46. His bones were not broken. Psalm 34:20. His side was pierced. Zechariah 12:10.
While we were still
sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:1-8. We remember he died, but he was also raised. John 20:1-20. Acts 17:31. He will come again. We must show up and do whatever is needed as Joseph and the women did. We must have a quiet resolve not to compromise our beliefs, but stand up for Jesus so that God can use us as he did Joseph.

The Final Hymn was Stand up Stand up for Jesus, after which the Closing Prayer was given by Peter Beardsmore.

Children’s Church was by taught by Geoff and Jean Sole. Following a programme on television about the apostle Peter, the young people in the Watford congregation on the 4th of April looked briefly at some of the things that Peter did. Specifically they considered Mathew 26:69-75 when Peter denied knowing Jesus three times. Subsequently the children did some jigsaw puzzles of a cockerel and also made several origami cockerels.
