Hymn 4 – There is a Green Hill Far Away
5 – He who would Valiant Be

The Message was given by Geoff Sole, who spoke about four men who lived at different times in the same area of England. Through God’s Holy Spirit they each became a giant of Christianity.
John Wycliffe translated the Bible into English and then traveled around the country distributing them. His work still continues worldwide and their goal is for everyone to be able to read the Bible in their own language.
John Bunyan knew that God’s word was a lamp to his feet and a light to his path. Psalm 119:105. He was imprisoned in Bedford for his teaching. It was there he wrote the book “Pilgrim’s Progress” to get the gospel message out to people. He used putting on God’s armour often in his illustrations. Ephesians 6:10-18. His book still sells today and only the Bible has sold more copies. John also wrote the words of the hymn
“To be a Pilgrim”.
John Newton began the Clapham Group. They had a worldwide influence for social reform and helped to abolish slavery. He founded the Church Missionary Society, the Bible Society and British Tract Society. He wrote two very well known hymns. Amazing Grace and Glorious Things of
thee are Spoken. Psalm 87:2-3. Isaiah 42:16.
William Carey was also a social reformer. He founded the Baptist Missionary Society. He saw a great need for missionary work worldwide, and became the first missionary to go to India. He became known as the father of modern missions. He based his work on Romans 10:13-15. Sent, hear, believe, saved. He wrote that we should expect great things from God and attempt great things for God. 1 Corinthians 12:6-7 teaches us
that through God’s Holy Spirit we also can be included to serve others for the benefit of all.

The Final Hymn was Glorious Things of thee are Spoken, after which the Closing Prayer was given by Sueann Henderson.

Fellowship continued over Refreshments in the Church Hall.

The children and young people were in the Church for the Service today.
