These past 13 weeks have been a time when COMMUNICATION has become even more important to each of us. Fortunately we live in a time when technology gives us so many options, from writing and posting a letter, to ‘zooming’ together on-line!  We can telephone friends and family to check on and encourage them; and with today’s modern phones, can use whatsapp and other apps to send photographs or videocall. We can email to keep in touch, we can post things on facebook, use twitter and all the social media platforms available.

It has been a steep learning curve for many of us who can now Skype, as David and I do with our son John and his family each Friday night:

Many of us benefited from a ‘Zoom’ prayer meeting hosted by our UK Church, ‘GCI AGAINST RACISM’ on June 11:
There is another ‘zoom’ event planned for this coming Thursday, 7pm on June 25. The planned hour of prayer is on the topic of ‘Prayers for the people of the UK & Ireland in a time of crisis.’

I mentioned a steep learning curve but there are those who are not up to speed and still at the bottom of the hill, like the Grandma who asked what her grandson would like for his birthday—he wanted an ipad:

Or the man visiting his daughter—he asked if he could borrow a newspaper. “This is the 21st century” she said. “We don’t waste money on newspapers. Here, use my iPad.”
I can tell you this…that fly never knew what hit him!

The origin of communications is God, who spoke the world into existence by His Word. And so our first hymn today is God Speaks To Us:
HYMN NO. 1 – GOD SPEAKS TO US – WCG 230

By His great power we’re led. We listen to His voice and he hears us. Our next hymn sings of our communication to God in prayer:
HYMN NO. 2 – GIVE EAR UNTO MY WORDS, O LORD – WCG 25

We sang ‘I early will direct my prayer to Thee and looking up, an answer will expect.’ In Speaking of Life this week Dr. Joseph Tkach reassures us that He Hears Your Voice:
SPEAKING OF LIFE: DR. JOSEPH TKACH – HE HEARS YOUR VOICE

God’s ears are tuned to our voice and he hears us when we call on him.
Not like the grandmother in the hospital: she telephoned St. Joseph’s Hospital and timidly asked, “Is it possible to speak to someone who can tell me how a patient is doing?” The operator said, “I’ll be glad to help, dear. What’s the name and room number of the patient?” The grandmother in her weak, tremulous voice said, “Norma Findlay, Room 302.” The operator replied, “Let me put you on hold while I check with the nurse’s station for that room.” After a few minutes, the operator returned to the phone and said, “I have good news. Her nurse just told me that Norma is doing well. Her blood pressure is fine; her blood work just came back normal and her physician has scheduled her to be discharged tomorrow.” The grandmother said, “Thank you. That’s wonderful. I was so worried. God bless you for the good news.” The operator replied, “You’re more than welcome. Is Norma your daughter?” The grandmother said, “No, I’m Normal Findlay in Room 302. The staff tell me NOTHING!”

Sometimes it is good to say nothing. Psalm 46:10 (NKJV) says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Philippians 4:8 urges us, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.” Let’s take a moment to BE STILL and meditate or pray.

Communication can be by word but also by example–body language and non-verbal communication speaks volumes:
Hebrews 11:4 tells how “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.”

Our next hymn tells how even the heavens God’s glory do declare—that ‘day after day their speech pours forth, and knowledge night after night! There is no speech nor spoken word, their voice is never heard, and yet their voice spreads to all the earth, their words to the end of the world.’

Though our actions may speak louder than words, words are important too, both to hear and to speak. It is now time to hear the Word:

We have heard God’s Word expounded and now it is time for us to speak once again in song. Colossians 4:6 tells us to “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” And speech is important for sharing the gospel because we’ve a story to tell to the nations:
HYMN NO. 4 – WE’VE A STORY TO TELL TO THE NATIONS – WCG 180
youtube link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C1q-fDpiKng

We’ve a story to tell to the nations;
We’ve a song to be sung to the nations;
We’ve a message to give to the nations:
That God sent us His son to save us and
show us that God is love!

Smiling is infectious,
You catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner
And someone saw my grin.
When he smiled I realized
I’d passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,
Then I realized its worth.
A single smile, just like mine
Could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,
Don’t leave it undetected,
Let’s start an epidemic quick,
And get the world infected!
