This time of year has always been marked by the red poppies that grow in Flanders fields where so many of the dead are buried from the war. Most people are very familiar with the poignant and stirring poem written by Major and surgeon John McCrae, who called the war a nightmare as he served with the Canadian Field Artillery at Ypres:
